Thank you for visiting the Friendship Flight donation page for the Stand By You Cancer Foundation. The trip is now over - I made it back safely after realising my dream of flying along the Morning Glory. BUT those affected by cancer still need help, so the fundraising page is still going.
Thank you for your generosity!
About the big adventure: 'Fun' and 'run' are not words I tend to associate however, I like the concept of raising funds doing something I enjoy. So I've planned this amazing adventure of flying a motor glider from one end of Australia to the other.
I decided I will fly a motor glider from the south coast of Australia, through the remote outback, to the north coast of Australia, raising funds for others who have had a bad year and need a helping hand.
From Bass Straight near Melbourne in the south, to Burketown on the Gulf of Carpenteria in the north, the route will cross the outback through Bourke, Charleville, and Longreach.
If you've ever heard of Burketown, you're probably wondering why anyone would want to go there, let alone fly over some of the most desolate and remote areas on the planet to get there in the first place. But like Everest is to climbers, Tour de France is to cyclists and the Sydney-Hobart is to sailors, Burketown is the dream for many glider pilots. Why? Because in Burketown, once a year in springtime, one might be lucky enough to encounter a rare and unique cloud called the Morning Glory. Surfing silently along this cloud at dawn is what glider pilot dreams are made of.
The departure date was September 24th 2010 and the journey was completed on November 21st 2010. Updates were regularly posted to the trip blog http://morningglory2010.blogspot.com Check it out.
If, by making my gliding dream come true, I can help others who have been affected by cancer and desperately need support, 2010 (and 2011) will truly be a year to remember, for all the right reasons.
