RIDING TO EDUCATE CHILDREN IN AFRICA

Education is the most sustainable form of aid and is the cornerstone of our work. Katoke’s mission is to build healthier and better-educated communities in north-western Tanzania by equipping individuals caught in the poverty trap of subsistence living, to take charge of, and continue their own development. To this end, one of Katoke’s main projects is the construction and operation of a Secondary School. The School first opened its doors in 2008 and in 2016 has over 470 students.

In 2016, the Katoke Trust for Overseas Aid will again be running the Katoke Cycle Series to raise awareness and funds for communities doing it tough in Tanzania. Our next ride is the Lithgow to Bathurst return. We are aiming to raise $5,000 from the ride to provide 5 one-year sponsorships to students commencing in 2016.

There are two ways you can support the Katoke;s Lithgow to Bathurst initiative.

All donations are tax deductible! As the Trust is run by volunteers virtually 100% of funds raised go directly to projects on the ground.

KEY RIDE DETAILS

DATES: 18th -20th March 2016 (ride starts approx 7am on Saturday 19th March)

START AND END LOCATION: 57 View St Lidsdale, Camp Marantha. Onsite overnight parking available for duration of ride. Access to site from 5.30pm on 18th March. Please be on-site by 9pm latest.

COST: $165 for the weekend including food and accomodation, basic tools/ supplies for repairs (Day 1 only is $98, Day 2 only is $78)

WHAT TO BRING: Your riding gear, sleeping bag, air bed, dinner on Friday night

Our immediate needs

STUDENT SPONSORSHIP – The Trust established the Katoke-Lweru Secondary School to meet the great need for secondary education in Tanzania. Through your ongoing support we have educated over a thousand students in the last 11 years. But there are still many children who aren’t able to attend KLSS due to their family and financial circumstances. Would you help us raise funds in order to sponsor these students?

REMOTE LEARNING – The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the world in many different ways. Here in Australia it’s meant that most school students have been forced to study from home, this is also the case in Tanzania. However, KLSS students do not have their own school supplies, textbooks, stationery or even computers. Would you help us raise funds in order to equip teachers to support students and provide crucial supplies for these childre

HEALTH LITERACY – A vital component of the Katoke Trust’s ongoing fight against poverty has been our malaria-prevention education program which has seen malaria reduced in local villages from over 60% of people infected per annum to about 10%. The Katoke Trust has been facilitating health education and equipping local villages with personal hygiene products in order to help combat COVID-19 in Tanzania, where hospitals and healthcare are not readily available to all. Would you help us raise funds to support our ongoing malaria-prevention programs, and provide health-care workers and local villagers with the means to combat COVID-19?.

Major Objectives

1. Partnership - Identify needs, through interaction with the local community and their leaders as well as in consultation with government agencies and other institutions.

2. Fundraising - Raise funds to finance projects to address these needs, by direct donations from supporters, by special events and approaches to government or private funding agencies.

3. Recruit and brief suitable volunteers to work in Tanzania.

4. Capacity building - Educate Tanzanians into professions and trades and in specific areas such as management and leadership.

5. Communicate with stakeholders - Communicate effectively about emerging needs and progress on our projects.

Working Together

Long term links with Katoke, which were begun by Australians in the 1920s, have been built upon in current relationships with the local leaders. The Trust is a Christian organisation that provides aid for people irrespective of their race, colour or religion. Since the Trust began, members have made regular self-funded visits twice a year to ensure a flexible approach to aid delivery and close personal supervision of financial and management processes.

The Future

A major part of our work is to develop strong local leadership that will be able to take initiative and ensure sustainability of projects and the wider developmental momentum. In this regard the Katoke Lweru Secondary School is a vital long-term investment for the nurture of local leadership.
