About

Hi, My name is Sandra Sono. I'm 24 years old and i live in Sydney NSW. I have cerebral palsy ( CP).

My journey began on the 25th October 1989 in Lima, Peru. I was born 3 months premature and my parents were told that IF i survived, i would never walk, talk or have movement in my arms. This is when i began to fight.
After a month in PICU i was finally strong enough to go home. I wasn't diagnosed straight away - my family realised that something was wrong when i wasn't reaching the milestones my sisters had- I was yet to crawl or talk. luckily a close family friend was a therapist who was specialised in children with disabilities and picked up on some of the signs i was showing.

After i was diagnosed i started the little treatment that was available to us in Peru at that time.
I had my first achilles tendon lengthening at the age of 2, which wasn't at all helpful.

When i was 3, my parents brought me and my two older sisters to Australia and my life changed forever. I was introduced to the organisation i owe so much to: The Spastic Centre, now known as The Cerebral Palsy Alliance. The wonderful staff and doctors there offered so many different resources which allowed me to live a very fulfilling life.

I must add though, I owe so much of who i am today to my wonderful mother who NEVER let me miss a physio appointment, who encouraged me to join in, who never let me say "I can't" or never allowed me accept NO as an answer. Together with my family i proved those doctors in Peru wrong.

Unfortunately i have experienced many challenges in my life but i was lucky enough to have such great values engraved in me by my wonderful family that i have never given up, and i promise i never will.

I have had the best treatment provided to me by the CP alliance, every year from year 1 in primary school until year 7 in highschool i got plasters put on my legs to encourage better walking, after many years of plasters my treatment team suggested using AFO's (Splints) and when i finally stopped growing it was time to try surgery to extended my achilles tendon which was then followed by many calf muscle lengthenings.

My last operation was on my left calf muscle in 2012, unfortunately this was a failed procedure which left me with nerve damage and chronic pain.

In 2013 i saw a specialist as i noticed i had less mobility and extremely tight muscles. The doctor suggested trying Botox injections. I had my first dose of botox in october 2013 followed by 4 months of intense physio and hydrotherapy.

Once i had finished the program i had no results and was given the very sad news that my mobility was rapidly decreasing.

I currently have about 5-10 minutes of mobility left with the weakness in my legs increasing rapidly. I am now dependant on a wheelchair when leaving the house.
My parents had to self fund the wheelchair as it was an urgent need, and not for one minute did the fact of low income stop them from doing this for me.

My family who have always supported me are now struggling with the financial needs which would allow me to be fully independent whilst in a wheelchair.

The reason for this page is that we are urgently needing to renovate our two storey house as my current bedroom is up a flight of stairs which are becoming harder to navigate each day, we are hoping to get this done as soon as possible as we can't predict when or if the 5-10 minutes of mobility i have left will remain or go completely.

I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for the unconditional love and support of my amazing family and friends, I'm currently fully dependant on these amazing people as i re-learn to live my life in a different way. I'm currently unable to work so i've been feeling a little useless with helping fund all the different equipment and changes to the house so i thought that i would use the one thing that i have, and that is my story.

If i can reach just one person with my story i have already done enough. Today I'm sharing this in order to help my family and also to begin the journey of learning to be 100% independent in a wheelchair.

My name is Sandra Sono, and i have cerebral palsy and I'm newly dependent of a wheelchair but my goals remain the same and i know i will achieve them regardless of any obstacle put in front of me, with the support of my amazing friends and family i CAN do anything i set my mind to.

Thank you,
Sandra.
