Every 40 seconds someone takes their own life according to Livin.org. That is someones loved one, its someones mother, father, sister, brother, cousin, partner, friend and the list goes one. That is a staggering number to accept. It's 2021, we are in the middle of a pandemic, and still the stigmatisation of mental illness and suicide is there. We need to change the conversation we need to make it easier to ask for help, ask for support without fear. Each life matters and mental health awareness and funding for support are so important, especially now during a pandemic and the times we are living in.
I wanted this run to mean something more than just me achieving a fitness goal, and as added motivation I wanted to run for a cause close to my heart.
I have decided to run for suicide awareness with all donations to go to livinorg.
So I've decided to face one hell of a challenge, I am going to run 21 kms, for myself to show I can do it. And I am asking If you can to please sponsor me in this run with the proceeds going to Livin.org.
Why am I so passionate about this cause, because a long time ago, I almost was a statistic. Treatment and support saved my life. Finally getting the strength to speak, saved my life.
Unfortunately, I also know people who have become a statistic, and for their families and friends left behind, because this has a ripple effect, it changes everyone. Mental health conditions should not be stigmatized, people should not feel scared to speak or ask for help because they are afraid of what others with think or repercussions from their employer, family and friends.
As far as I'm concerned it is not weak to speak or ask for help. In my eyes, it is a sign of strength!
Because the fact is, I would rather listen all day to all of your problems no matter how trivial you feel they are, then risk having to listen to your eulogy.
You amaze me! Good luck for Sunday!
