OFB Australia- La Olla was created during the Covid crisis . We were able to provide and deliver hampers for international students and CALD community in the city of Brisbane, in what we called Phase 1. "Food during lockdowns".
REACH AND ESTABLISH PHASE 2!
First and foremost. In 2020 we learnt that it is better to be prepped for the unexpected. We need to establish emergency funds so that we can be ready to deploy our support to the community in any given case.
And,
But what is Phase 2? : Going out to the community looking to provide an improvement in mental health after the 2020 crisis, with events related to socializing, nature, sports and of course the gathering around food.
In the long run (Phase 3) we are looking to become a supporting hub for the community in the city.
There is a crisis persisting but only different. We are currently going through recession plus long term isolation. Yes, some people still need to access food but can't in a way. Social distancing and changes in everyday habits have affected the population's well- being and mental health. Everything seems to fit in a turmoil of a new normal as if nothing happened. Yet, many people are struggling:
Example: Park+ Yoga+ Walks around the bush+ Take what you need food stall+ Free lunch on the grass.
La Olla. OFB Australia
Food. Connect. Community
The organization was created as a response to mitigate the impact during the COVID-19 2020 crisis.
Few days before the lockdowns began, the risk for some speficic communities in the city such as international students and working holidays was imminent. The amount of people facing potential hunger, homelesness and poverty was growing by the numbers. Our initial survey showed that around 600 students were not going to be able to stand the first hit. Furthermore, they wouldn't be able to sustain themselves for two months. Now think about 8 months!
As a team conformed by leaders of the Latino community in Brisbane, we coordinated and developed an organization to provide connections and access to: food supplies and support to lessen the impact and defend the right to well- being of any individual.
CALD in general, especially temporary residents such as intl' students and working holidays in Australia, face real hardship even without 2020 crisis, it is a systemic flaw that hasn't been adressesed. They come to live the Australian experience and end up skipping lunches, overworking for hours and sometimes living in poor conditions. We want to help our lovely community of Brisbane to lessen the impact so we can all live a dignified life filled with abundance for all.
