About
Hi everyone,
On Sunday I ran in the Melbourne Marathon to raise awareness and funding for the Australian BPD Foundation.
What is BPD?
BPD or Borderline Personality Disorder is a complex mental disorder that is often misunderstood. Symptoms for people with this disorder include chronic emotional distress, self-harm, difficulty relating to others and the world around them. This can be very distressing for the person and for their friends and family.
Sadly, for a long-time many people within mental health services believed that BPD was not a treatable condition. However it has been recently identified that with early diagnosis, appropriate treatment and support the prognosis for people with BPD is positive with many people with this disorder recovering.
Currently between 1% and 4% of Australians, that's 250,000 to 1,000,000 individuals are affected by BPD at some stage in their lives.
My sister was diagnosed with BPD a few years ago and before she passed away in June this year my family and I found it extremely difficult to find mental health services with enough resources to help support her.
A lot of funding is invested in programs focused on the prevention of mental health disorders however programs focused on rehabilitation regularly struggle to find the funding they need to offer their services. This means that there are not enough resources available to support the people that need them.
The Australian BPD foundation is committed to dispelling the myths and negative culture that has developed around BPD. They partner with a number of organisation including Spectrum who work closely with people like my sister and their families on recovery.
I’d love it if you can help support me in raising money for these people and their families who I know are desperate for resources. Together we can help give them a chance at recovery that my sister didn’t get to have.
We are a group of volunteers passionate in developing an open dialogue between consumers, carers, clinicians and researchers to encourage a positive culture around the mental health issue known as borderline personality disorder (BPD)
