The Problem

Hip dysplasia isn't life threatening, but it can be life changing. A lack of prior awareness for the condition makes the diagnosis and commencement of treatment an overwhelming and isolating time.

8 children a day are diagnosed with hip dysplasia in Australia, and the incidence of late diagnosis is rising. 185 total hip replacements are performed on adults under 55 in Australia, each year, due to hip dysplasia.

This is just the tip of the iceberg - thousands more are impacted by the condition every day. Those waiting and watching to see if their child has it or not. Those wondering if their next child will have it. Those living with it as a teenager or adult and feeling the daily impact of the limitations it places on their daily life.

Together We Can Make A Difference!

Before 2015 there was nowhere to turn to but Google and Facebook to try and find some information, or someone who’d experienced the condition to answer your thousands of questions.

Healthy Hips Australia has been set up to fill this much-needed gap. It is the only organisation in Australia working to increase support, improve education and raise awareness for hip dysplasia. In 2017/2018, almost 2000 queries from our community was meet with 18, 500 replies from the rest of our community, offering support and advice. Our website received 81,000 visitors that year too.

The percentage of people feeling uninformed about the condition in the days after diagnosis has improved from 79.5% down to 54% since HHA began but there is still work to be done in this respect. Until now we have relied on word of mouth to help connect people to our community. Some of you have found us but there are thousands of others who have not.

We are now asking for your support to help connect people to our community at the time they need it most; not weeks or months down the track but when hip dysplasia is first queried or diagnosed.

Funding is needed to improve how effectively we connect with and support people impacted by hip dysplasia in Australia. It will also help us to extend the reach of our awareness initiatives.

$2 connects 1 new family/person to our community.

$10 gives 5 families / people access to up-to-date support resources.

$20 facilitates hosting a face-to-face support group.

$40 will pay for an allied health professional to be available via a helpline, or online chat service, for an hour to offer expert and practical support for those in need.

$161 covers the printing costs for 1000 flyers, to connect people impacted by hip dysplasia to us in a timely manner.

The target of $10,000 is a fraction of what is needed to meet the support needs of our community but every single dollar counts. Don’t think your contribution won’t have an impact. I started Healthy Hips with nothing but passion and it’s carried the organisation a pretty long way already. Now let's  work together to minimise the potential for the condition to have a life changing impact on a person’s life together.

About Healthy Hips Australia

Both my girls were treated for hip dysplasia. One day I got to thinking that I probably wasn’t alone in how I felt about the lack of support and awareness. It dawned on me that there might be a silver lining to having had a background in occupational therapy whilst facing treatment for two babies with DDH. This realisation inspired me to set up Healthy Hips Australia.

Demand has seen Healthy Hips Australia grow much faster than anticipated. This is exciting; however, I have exhausted my voluntary DIY capacity in operating on a shoe-string budget and now need to implement a support program that will formalise, and help make sustainable, what I have been doing voluntarily, and largely on my own, over the past four years.

People like you donating or fundraising helps us to give the gift of a sense of belonging to everyone on a hip journey no matter how long or short it is. Give the gift of a sense of belonging TODAY!
