Last year my mum, Lynne, passed away from scleroderma. She heroically fought her battle with the illness for 27 years, displaying incredible strength, courage and determination until the end.
World Scleroderma Day is on 29 June. My family and I are taking this opportunity to raise awareness of scleroderma and to raise funds for the Autoimmune Research and Resource Centre (the ARRC).
Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease that can cause serious damage to internal organs including the lungs, heart, kidneys, esophagus, and gastrointestinal tract. It can be life threatening. The sunflower is the national symbol for Scleroderma Australia, like the sunflower which turns towards the sun for warmth, people with scleroderma are usually more comfortable in warmer weather.
The ARRC facilitated treatment and provided immense support for mum over a number of years. The ARRC is "dedicated to helping people living with autoimmune illness reach their full life potential despite having chronic illness". Many of the staff at the ARRC became firm friends of my mother over the years.
We would be most appreciate if you could please donate a few dollars to this very worthy cause. Every cent counts. Please feel free to share this page amongst family and friends to help us raise awareness of scleroderma.
