Can you help us?

A dreadful case of animal neglect. Dogs locked in cages, owner on holidays and advising the caretaker not to feed the animals. A true House of Horrors!

The full story:

We were called to the property to check on five dogs being held in cages. The whole property was filthy with cages and chains everywhere, even though it was a huge property that animals could actually roam freely in big gardens if they were allowed.

As soon as we got to the room, we were hit by the stench! Five dogs all in cages, the caretaker had been cleaning the room for hours and there was still urine, faeces and vomit caked on the floor and in the cages.

Some of the cages were raised off the ground so the dogs only had wire to stand or sit on, despite there being fake grass pads on top of their cages. Some of the cages were on the ground so the dogs were in their own excrement.

The caretaker had given them food and water despite being told by the owner not to worry about feeding them. The owner was only concerned about feeding the two dogs in the house.

To this end, we discovered one dog had died over night - and while the suggestion was made that it died from old age - it is apparent the dog died of starvation and neglect judging from the state it’s body was in. We later found out that this was the sixth dog that had died on the property.

Breaking open the cages:

The cages were all locked, with some in fact unable to be open unless the doors were broken, or the cages lifted. The remaining four dogs were skinny, with matted coats, eye infections, and filthy from their own faeces, vomit and urine.

Two huskies and the golden retriever barked initially however they quickly wagged tails at being patted and upon hearing calming voices. They were happy to leave their cages as BARC Team Heros, Agus and Murja, put all 3 of them in one cage together for ease of transport.

The one black Bali dog, still alive, was in a terrible state. It had obviously been locked up and not fed for a lot longer than the other dogs. We had been asked by the caretaker (with permission later given by the owner) to take the five dogs, however after seeing the state of the additional 2 huskies (a mother and puppy) inside the house, they came along with the other dogs for medical assessment and vet care.

There were another two Bali dogs on the property, one who is friendly, one that is scared. Both thin but because they can roam, they are getting more food than the others. The caretaker informed us that she was advised not to feed them either as the owner wanted them to go away. With all the caged dogs and dogs at risk medically now loaded into the BARC rescue truck, the caretaker said she would continue to feed the two roaming dogs until suitable shelter could be found. They were assessed by our vet nurse and it was agreed while they were hungry, they were medically ok and just need a cuddle and lots of food.

The caretaker was amazing, she continued to feed these two dogs and helped them trust people again by constantly talking to them, giving them love and attention. We want to recognise the incredible efforts of the caretaker - thank you so much! You see, the caretaker had another reason she had to keep coming back to the property.....

The Monkey:

The monkey was in an enclosure with small windows and very little natural light. The caretaker was also told not to feed or give and water to the monkey as it will learn to get mangoes from the tree nearby. This was simply not possible: firstly there was no way the monkey could get to the tree; and secondly there was no fruit on any of the trees at all!

In order to give it water the caretaker had to fill a plastic bottle and squeeze it into the window mesh to get it to the monkey. We worked in conjunction with Femke from JAAN (Jakarta Animal Aid Network), who has agreed to help as we are not able to introduce another monkey into the Sanctuary at this time.

All animals have now been removed from the property and we are monitoring the location for the owners return...

All of the dogs are now out from the House of Horrors and are safe in BARC's care. Again, thank you to Femke from JAAN for her support with the Monkey!

After their the initial medical costs, each of the dogs will need worming, vaccinating & sterilizing. Along with boarding until suitable homes can be located (potentially 3 months).

Estimated totals are: $1,850 USD (converted to AUD $2,280) for all 8 dogs.
