The Story behind this Mural
The Peace Mural is a modern celebration of the Mayoral Victory Ball held at the Maryborough Town Hall at the end of the First World War. The night’s program featured dancing, music provided by a “Naval Band” and a 30 foot model airship suspended from the ceiling. The main attraction however was the Peace Cake (see our sculpture of the Peace Cake on the Maryborough Mural Trail).
The Peace Mural represents the joy of our community at the return of peace after four tragic years of war. It seeks to remind us all of the importance of keeping community peace in our troubled times. Design is by artist Craig Winter.
About the Maryborough Mural Project
The Maryborough Mural Project Charity aims to revitalize the Queensland Maryborough City Centre through Art and is modelled on the success of other towns such as Chemainus in Canada and Sheffield in Tasmania. See http://muraltown.com and http://www.sheffieldmurals.com.
The Project is focusing on two themes: P.L Travers & Mary Poppins and Maryborough’s History including quirky, funny and famous stories about people who have lived or have been born here.
All resources needed to produce and install the artworks are provided through the generosity of the Maryborough community, including the provision of in-kind support from local businesses for paint, scaffolding, and other items to produce and promote the murals. We estimate in-kind support from our community to be $14,000 plus for each mural (not including the artist commission or our volunteers’ time).
We have completed a total of 11 murals and one sculpture to date, but need to raise further funds to continue and complete our aim of 20 murals by the end of the year.
The funds are to pay the artist’s commission. Without quality artists we have no project.
Donations of $500 or more will acknowledged through the inclusion of the donor’s name on the Mural Storyboard (a plaque beside the mural that tells the story of the mural and acknowledges major contributors).
