I am paddling again in the Massive Murray Paddle 2016 and raising money for our local community. The focus of this campaign is to raise awareness of Men’s Health issues, in particular bowel cancer and prostate cancer. Here is why.
A little over 18 months ago my younger brother was diagnosed with liver cancer and bowel cancer at the age of 45. He has progressed well through his treatment and the prognosis is good. Just a few weeks ago my paddling partner and friend was also diagnosed with bowel cancer at the age of 47. I am now paddling the full distance on my own.
The recent experience of my brother and my paddling partner and friend has raised the matter of men, in general, not doing enough to manage their own health.
I am raising the funds for the Swan Hill District Health - Health Promotion department and we are going to hold an event and run an awareness campaign focusing on men’s health to encourage men to look after themselves and get regular health checks. Funds donated to the My cause Gift Fund will be disbursed to Swan Hill District Health. The trustees will always disburse funds to the nominated cause, however in the case that that is not possible, the funds will be disbursed to a DGR charity at the trustees discretion.
