In 2007 Fergie had the Number One song on the ARIA Charts, Happy Feet was the toe tapping film of the year AND…it was the last time I cut my hair short. Nearly ten years later, I'm going to do it again…but this time it's not quite a fashion choice.
WHY, YOU ASK? Well, I love my long hair...but it's not something I had given much thought to until my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014 and I saw her deal with knowing she was about to lose all of hers during the intensive chemo. It's the first time I really appreciated how much we associate hair to our sense of self, ideals of beauty and feeling "complete" or "normal". At the time I offered to lop off my locks to create a wig for my mum, knowing she wouldn't want a stranger's tresses on her head. I'll admit I was a little relieved when she said "no" and opted to rock the scarves and turbans instead.
However, when my mum went to her hairdresser to get THE cut before her locks were about fall out, a complete stranger offered to donate her long black shiny hair to my mum for a wig. This made me realise, I'm lucky enough to have long locks that, if not my mum, someone else may be in need/want of. So, just as that beautiful stranger offered her hair to my mum, I thought I'd pay it forward and offer mine to a beautiful stranger out there.
SO, for the past two years I've been growing out my hair with some sense of purpose. Since you can't donate coloured hair, I had to wait till it was all my own colour again (for the first time in 16 yrs!) and over the 30cm mark.
HOW YOU CAN HELP: I originally wanted to raise funds to get the wig made but I have since discovered that Variety Children's Charity sell the hair donated to pay for the wigs they provide to children with cancer and alopecia. But I've decided to raise funds anyway and split them between three (I think) deserving charities that have helped my family and continue to help millions of families alike.
The money raised will be split between: *The McGrath Foundation - who do a great job providing nurses for post-operative care at home *National Breast Cancer Foundation - they provide lots of info & tools for patients and support *Pink Hope Australia - support women genetically at risk
THE BIG CHOP: Will take place 22nd July AND the amazing Blythe, Kris and Toni & Guy Chatswood team (who are amazing and I've been treating my tresses there forever!!) have very kindly offered to donate the cost of my cut and colour back to the cause! Yay!!
My target is to raise $1,500 but to sweeten the deal...if I somehow manage to raise over $10K I'll go Platinum Blonde and if I get over $15K, I'll go pixie cut whatever colour you like!!!!(Eeek!)
So please give generously…although, even a little goes a long way!
