Hello,
I'm doing a race this weekend called The Alpine Challenge (100 mile trail run through the mountains) and the organisers want us competitors to help raise some funds for Alpine Search & Rescue who help skiers, walkers (and runners!) and anyone else who may come unstuck in the High Country.
The course is pretty epic. Apart from being 160km in length, it also takes in Victoria's highest peaks and involves massive climbs and descents, rough tracks, fallen trees, river crossings, potential extremes in weather, snakes and self-navigation (course is unmarked). I'm guessing it will take me between 30 and 40 hours to complete (providing I make it to the finish - apparently the drop-out rate for competitors is quite high). I've posted some pics taken from a few training runs that I did in the region last week. There are also some other pics showing the terrain in winter, although it is not uncommon for it to snow up there at any time of year - just like it did the first year they ran the event (and no one finished!)
If you want to donate a few dollars to Alpine Search & Rescue and leave a message, simply select the donate button above. I will try and write up something about the race afterwards.
Cheers,
Simey
Thanks Alpine Search and Rescue for doing such a great job in helping run the event. I was amazed at how you all were camped at some pretty wild locations for the whole weekend making sure the runners came through safely (including throughout the night). It was a pleasure to meet you all.
