Sophie is walking 1000km of the Bibbulmun Track in Western Australia....all the way from Perth to Albany! This will take her around 66 days to complete. Sophie is doing this not only as a personal challenge, but to raise awareness and funds for EYE (Environmental Youth Experience), which is run by the Centre for Ecological Learning Inc (a not for profit registered Australian charity).
Since 2007, EYE has been getting young people out into the bush to reconnect with nature and with themselves. More than 600 young people have had their lives changed by these camps which let them reconnect with their wild side and take a break from the stresses of everyday techno-life. At the camps, they not only learn “Survival Skills” like fire making and shelter building, but they also develop the interpersonal and leadership skills they need to become change agents in their communities. For some young people, these camps are a lifeline to reconnection, mental health, and excellent mentoring. Many of the EYE camp participants have gone on to become camp leaders and junior mentors themselves.
Sophie is currently doing her teacher training, and has seen that with so many outside influences (such as social media and videos) and the stresses of life in general, many young people are led down a disillusioned track towards anxiety and depression as well as mental illness, a lack in self confidence, and health disorders. Sophie feels strongly that experiences in nature, away from technology and the bombardment of external influences allow for children, young people and adults to reconnect to themselves, the earth and each other.
So as well as raising money for EYE, this walk is about promoting the benefits of a little fresh air, a stroll away from it all and the positive effects of breathing in all the natural world offers.
If 1000 people donate just $10.00 then the goal will be reached. If 500 people donate $20 the goal will be reached even faster. Please sponsor now. Your donation is tax deductible and will go directly towards EYE camps in 2016.
The Centre for Ecological Learning offers young people and adults the chance to reconnect to self, community, and the planet through our camps, retreats, workshops, and community events. EYE (Environmental Youth Experience) is the youth branch of CEL and runs nature connection camps for teenagers.
