Premature birth is the leading cause of death and disability of children under the age of five in Western Society. The Western Australian Preterm Birth Prevention Initiative aims to safely lower the rate of preterm birth by 15% over the next two years and 35% over five years, through an integrated and state-wide campaign involving new clinical strategies, education programs for health care providers and the general public, and a new trial Preterm Birth Prevention Clinic at King Edward Memorial Hospital.
Phase One of the Initiative, being rolled out in 2015, is specifically aimed at educating Health Professionals, to be followed by a broader public awareness campaign in subsequent years.
With the exception of a pilot Preterm Birth Prevention Clinic which has recently recieved State Government funding, this Initiative has been privatley funded by the Women and Infants Research Foundation and needs more funding to continue.
It is going to take all of us to ensure that this Initiative results in more babies born at term, less babies lost due to premature birth and fewer babies born with life-long disabilities. Please donate today.
