Wi-Fi is not working, Facebook just crashed, Im stuck in traffic, my flight is delayed, yoga class is overbooked! Sound familiar? Im sure it does! Don’t you love First World problems?!! Now imagine being born with a disability and being dumped by your parents? What about finding out that your husband cheated on you, now you have HIV and your family disown you? Im sure you cannot imagine that in 2015! Well, it happens every day in many places around the world.
In Vietnam it is a daily occurrence and through my brother-in-law I have become involved in Chop Vietnam (CHOP) over recent years. CHOP is a charity located outside Saigon and home to almost 300 individuals that society has disowned because they are not “normal”. At CHOP they can be “normal”, they are loved, they have a roof over their heads and they have food on the table. Even in death, their families do not want to know them, however CHOP ensures some form of dignity by providing a traditional Vietnamese burial onsite. There is no government support. A local church does provide some aid and help, plus there are donations of food, clothes and money from locals or periodic CHOP events. So for July Im doing “Dry July” to raise much needed money for CHOP. Gosh, I wonder if I will survive my “new” First World problem of no bubbles for the month?! I know I will, but would love it if you could donate a few dollars or any other currency to help these poor souls that their world has simply forgotten about. Thanks so much. Ali. x
Chop Vietnam supports three community organisations in Saigon, Vietnam - an HIV Orphanage, Hospice HIV Outpatients Clinic, and a centre for physically and mentally handicapped children who have either been abandoned by their family who are unable to cope.
