St John Ambulance Australia Ophthalmic

In Australia St John Ambulance conduct a number of ophthalmic activities to support the St John Eye Hospital Group in Jerusalem, the people of Oecussi, Timor-Leste and Indigenous Australians in Moree, NSW.

St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group (SJEHG) is the only charitable provider of expert eye care in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem where rates of blindness are ten times higher than in the West. The hospital was originally established in Jerusalem in 1882. There are now satellite centres in Gaza, Hebron and Anabta and two mobile outreach clinics which take vital eye health services to isolated communities where people are unable to access health care and travel easily.  The work of the St John Eye Hospital group relives poverty, revives education and employment prospects and contributes to economic growth in the area.

St John Ambulance Australia supports four nurses; St John WA support two nurses; St John NSW support one nurse; and, across Australia other state and territory St John organisations contribute funds to support an additional nurse.

St John in Oecussi

St John has been operating in partnership with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) for several years to improve the health outcomes of the people of Oecussi. Each year St John and RACS travel to Oecussi to train and mentor ophthalmic health professions, to conduct eye screening and perform vision restoring surgeries. Last August, the team saw 350 cases and performed 45 surgeries. The services provided by RACS with support from St John are vital in improving and restoring sight which allows members of the Oecussi community to participate in their community.

Moree

NSW operates an ophthalmic outreach screening service in conjunction with Pius X Hospital in Moree.  The equipment has been donated by St John and is used by hospital staff to conduct eyesight screening for indigenous members in an around the Moree community.  Liaison Officers engage the community to promote the eye screening service as well arranging appointments.  Once screening is complete patients are referred to an Ophthalmologists or specialist as required.
