The Scrapheap Adventure Ride is a unique fundraising event which involves motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the country purchasing a bike for no more than $1000 and doing it up for an adventure ride through the Aussie outback, all while raising money for people with Down syndrome.

In just six years the event has raised nearly $400,000 for Down Syndrome NSW.

Riders begin their journey at home or wherever they like but arrive at the same destination.

This year that destination is Four Corners Farm Stay, Nymagee, in Western NSW, where all ‘Scrappers’ plus family and friends will meet for a weekend of fun and entertainment at a campsite from September 30 to October 2.

How did it all begin?

Scrapheap Adventure Ride's founder, Perry Gilsenan, is an unstoppable and inspirational father who is always up for an adventure. Perry believes in always celebrating the joys of life. Perry's life has had a few challenges along the way, yet there is no lack of positivity from him.

Perry lost both of his legs in a train accident in 1976. He also shattered his spine and fractured fourteen ribs in a horrific car accident in 1988. Through faith, hard work, a never-say-die attitude, and a thick application of humour at every step, Perry regained his mobility and now walks unsupported on prosthetics – as well as riding his beloved Scrapheap motorbikes.

When Perry's daughter Grace was born with Down Syndrome thirteen years ago, this began a close link between Perry and the Down Syndrome community. He wanted to raise awareness and funds for the association that provides support to people with Down Syndrome and their families. Although raising a child with Down Syndrome is not without its challenges, it gives a fresh perspective on life. There sure is plenty of joy and the future is bright!
