Food For Change is a not for profit organisation that was set up in Melbourne in 2016 with the mission to alleviate food insecurity in Australia. As an organisation we believe in an abundant Australia where anybody can get the food relief they need at anytime, ?no matter the circumstances.
Currently 1 in 10 Australians seek food relief annually and over 1/4 of these people are turned away by food relief agencies due to a lack of fresh food resources.
Food For Change was born from the realisation of 4 key points
There are many amazing charities in Australia that provide meals and food to those in need and all of these organisations require more food.
These charities have an amazing distribution network already set up.
There is huge amounts of unused fertile land in every Australian city.
Australians waste over 4 million tonnes of food every year
From here we realised if we set up a charity whose purpose was to produce food on this unused land & rescue food on a small local scale we could then partner with existing organisations to deliver the food to feed hungry Australians.
Our Solution Is Simple - GROW | RESCUE | SUPPORT
GROW - Fresh and nutritious vegetables, fruit and herbs on unused land.
Food For Change uses land that is donated to us to grow as much food as possible to feed the thousands of hungry Australians who seek food relief every year. We grow nutritious & fresh fruit, vegetables & herbs. Our growing program is run by volunteers and all the food that we grow is donated to local food relief agencies.
RESCUE - Food via a network of food rescue drop points
Food For Change has been rescuing food locally since the beginning and during this time we have realised that local, small scale food rescue is not currently catered for. In response we have developed our Food Rescue App. The app puts local food donors together with local food relief organisations to maximise the amount of food rescued in Australia.
SUPPORT - Local food relief agencies and Local food education programs
All the food we grow and rescue serves one purpose and that is to support the food relief agencies who feed hungry Australians. From large organisations like FoodBank & SecondBite to small local agencies, we form strategic partnerships that uses existing infrastructure to deliver more food to those in need. We are also setting up partnerships with local community organisations to help support the education space relating to horticulture, urban farming and harvesting.
Since the first planting in Feb 2017 we have been able to supply local food relief agencies with enough fresh vegetables and herbs to feed over 6,000 people.
The future for Food For Change is bright and our focus is to reach our goal of being a part of the solution to hunger in Australia.
?To do this we are focusing on the following:?
2. Securing Land
3. Developing Our Food Rescue App
?4. Distributing the food to those in need in the most cost effective way
