I am running 10km at the Melbourne marathon festival on the 13th October 2013, to raise money for the Elizabeth Chanakira Cancer Trust (ECCT). The ECCT was set up by my best friend Tee Chanakira, whose mother Elizabeth Chanakira died of breast cancer in Zimbabwe in December 2010 after battling the disease for 7 years. During her illness, it became apparent how expensive medical treatment is in Zimbabwe, and the majority of patients cannot even afford even the most basic of medications. The ECCT was set up in May 2011 to support marginalised cancer patients in Zimbabwe, where there are no government subsidised treatments for cancer patients . The money raised will go towards 5 cancer patients aged between 16-45 who have been diagnosed with cancer in Zimbabwe. They are all unemployed due to ill health and/or stigmatization; have no extended support; have children or siblings who are unable to gain education due to financial lack; have insufficient income for medical-related needs; have insufficient food, clothing and blankets. The money will provide payment for one child's school fees, uniform and shoes; help with monthly prescription costs and Doctor’s consultations; monthly food hampers provided by Probrands, Zimbabwe; donations of clothing and blankets.
Having lost my own mother to breast cancer in 2009, I know only too well, not only the emotional cost of the disease, but the huge financial burden it places on the entire family. Even the smallest contribution can make a huge difference to these poor people who do not even have the most basic supplies.
Best wishes Nyari . We'll be thinking of you and your quest . Sally and Boris
