Jamie Milne is an experienced, in-demand trainer, results based Strength and Conditioning Coach and Ultra Marathon Runner.
In the late 1990s Jamie’s Grandmother Mary passed away after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Jamie describes his Nanny as a quiet homebody of a lady with a relentless warmth, love and affection for him and his family. Many Miles for Mary (MMFM) was a thought, a dream, a grieving process stemming from the day of Mary’s funeral. At the time of the service Jamie was unable to gather words to describe or farewell his Nanny at her passing, even though he really wanted to. He promised himself that day in some way shape or form, he would always remember Mary and farewell her in his own special way. So in 2009 it was with this promise MMFM the Ultra Endurance charitable awareness campaign was born.
This September, Jamie Milne will align Many Miles for Mary with Dementia Awareness month in a bid to strengthen the dementia awareness campaign and raise much needed funds to help make a difference with this worthy cause. MMFM is aiming to raise $20,000 to go towards much needed research through the Alzheimer's Australia Dementia Research Foundation.
Right now there are 413,106 Australians living with dementia with an estimated cost to the economy of $14.67 billion. Without a major research breakthrough these numbers are expected to rise to 1.1 million people living with dementia with an estimated annual cost to the economy of $36.85 billion by 2056.
With no cause or cure currently available, research grants are vital to reversing these estimates. The AADRF helps to grow capacity in dementia research through funding Australia’s best and brightest early career researchers to improve future outcomes for people living with dementia, their carers, family and friends.
Many Miles for Mary West Coast Run 2017:
Over 17 consecutive days Jamie, the Journey Runner will run a 2000km solo up the West Coast of Australia from Albany to Port Hedland during Dementia Awareness month. That's 2 marathons or 80km a day to Stand and Fight Against Dementia!
The Dementia Australia Research Foundation is the research arm of Dementia Australia which funds Australia’s talented new and early career dementia researchers. Support us and fund research into the causes, care, prevention and potential treatments for dementia.
