Operation Sponge aims to relocate over 5500 sponges and ascidians before they end up in landfill.
Commercial works at Balirgowrie Pier in Melbourne will see an old submerged wall replaced and without dedicated Eco-conscious intervention, a world renowned habitat will be lost. The old timbers are destined for landfill along with over 300 sqm of beautiful marine habitat home to seahorses, angler fish, nudibranchs, decorator crabs, octopus, cuttlefish, squid, fish and more!
A community of divers will physically remove sponges by hand and reattach using an underwater adhesive called Coral Glue, which does not come cheap!
We need over 50L of this expensive glue to save this habitat and we need all the help we can get!
The adhesive is a specially designed product for use on corals while underwater. Originally designed for domestic aquariums, it is now being upscaled in a major way in the name of conservation.
We need funds to buy the glue. The more glue we can acquire, the more sponges our divers can save!

I would ask all of my amazing friends and followers to consider making some contribution - large or small - to this important work that is happening NOW and which is only limited by the funds that are donated. If you care about the ocean, this project is YOUR way of helping to make a direct and immediate difference. My good friends at Operation Sponge are doing an extraordinary job of harnessing people power for a brilliant cause. Whether $5 or $500, please get behind them as every little bit counts.
