In 2007 my Dad, Colin Menzies, was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He sought treatment, and we all thought he was doing fine, until late last year he was diagnosed with secondary bone cancer. He died on May 25 this year.
I want to participate in Dry July, which raises funds for a selection of hospitals around Australia, but my Dad's experience of cancer treatment in his local hospital was not positive. So I've chosen instead to do my own Dry July through this website, with funds raised going to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.
As anyone who knew him would attest, Dad loved wine. But as his cancer progressed and his medication got stronger he was unable to drink. Watching him lose something that had brought him so much pleasure in his life was hard, and for this reason I'm choosing to participate in the Dry July challenge and giving up alcohol for the month of July.
