In September (2010) I’m going to Chengdu, China (self funded) and will be personally challenging myself to a 6 day trek, climbing up to elevations of 3,900 metres with all my gear in order to raise funds for the Animals Asia ‘Moon Bear Sanctuary in Chengdu. I’ll also be going to the Chengdu Sanctuary and the Giant Panda Breeding Research Centre, (some of you know how close to my heart that is :)
I have watched Animals Asia (founded by Jill Robinson MBE), grow over the years to the amazing charity that it is, achieving milestones such as gaining written agreement with Chinese Officials to end bear bile farming starting by closing down the worst farms in Sichuan, and expanding this programme across China in the longer term. For those of you who don’t know, the methods used to extract the bile are crude and extremely cruel, involving metal jackets and large (18cm) catheters placed into the bears abdomens.
