Dave Orlowski is a legend in the sport of Ironman. As one of the intrepid ‘originals’, Dave placed third in the inaugural Hawaii Ironman in 1978. Competing on a ‘K-Mart’ bike, in a pair of cut-off jeans and a harnessing a fair dash of naivety, Dave and the other ‘originals’ gave birth to a global phenomenon that now sees 100,000 people a year attempt to qualify for the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii.
After finishing the 1978 event, Dave didn’t race an Ironman event for another 30 years, until he went and completed the 2008 Ironman World Championships in Kona. Since that day Dave has been on a journey to do every Ironman around the world within 5 years, finishing with the 35th Anniversary at Kona.
In 2009 Dave, completed 6 Ironman’s and plans on doing another 7 or 8 in 2010, including Ironman Australia on March 28, which will be a special race for Dave and for some young Australian’s who are doing it a little tough. At Ironman Australia Dave will swim 3.8 Kilometres, ride 180 Kilometres and run 42.2 Kilometres to earn the title of Ironman, but also to raise funds for the John Maclean Foundation, which provides life changing funding for young Australian wheelchair users.
