I love Australia, especially the vast, denuded deserts that form the heart of this country.
The Simpson Desert Cycle Challenge (www.sdcc.org.au) is a 9 stage race covering 590km. It starts from Purni Bore on the western edge of the Simpson Desert to finish in Birdsville 5 days later. Along the way there are no towns, no buildings, no sealed roads, no fuel and no water. Support is provided by 4WD vehicles. Temperatures can reach 40C, there are 700 dunes to be crossed in the first 3 days, there can be sandstorms or rain can turn the tracks to liquid mud.
In some years no riders manage finish the full distance, for that reason its been called "Satans Velodrome".
It is a crazy event!
The race raises money for the Royal Flying Doctors (www.flyingdoctor.net) a charitable organization that provides emergency and primary medical care to remote regions of Australia.
Please give what you can.
Congratulations and well done
